Should you relocate for a new job or promotion?

In the current economic climate a lot of people (unemployed, underemployed and employed ) are considering expanding their job search outside of a commutable distance or looking  at a ‘sea change’.

People are no doubt feeling the pressure of higher unemployment rates, redundancies,  and the shrinking of internal opportunities and transformations resulting in decreased headcounts amongst many industries.  This seems to be a growing trend.

Whilst relocation and change can be exciting, you really need to consider the below points before making a commitment as it can be a stressful time for everyone involved:

  • Stay organised – when relocating for a new job, time may not always be on your side.  Therefore planning ahead is essential.  Create a file with detailed notes, timelines, contact names and phone numbers.  Ensure everything is in writing, most importantly offer of employment from a prospective employer.
  • Expensive –  Some companies do have a relocation policy where some assistance may be available.    Ensure that you investigate this before committing to something.  Would highly recommend renting first as it allows you to learn more about the area without the commitment of home ownership.  You will be able to get acquainted with the new job and new town/city in a more relaxed fashion.  Ensure that you investigate the cost of living and how much you can expect to earn v’s what you’re currently on and your lifestyle.
  • Local Support networks – ensure that you investigate local support services and facilities that are available prior to relocating.  For instance shopping centres, hospitals, sporting or interest groups.  Sure you will stay connected with friends and family, however relocating to a new area can be very isolating if you don’t know anyone or any services that the town may offer.  Isolation can become dangerous if not handled well.
  • Spouse/Partner opportunities – a large proportion of couples and families are dual income earners, therefore as a result, your partner will need to find a job.  Generally your partner will leave a job or stay in the old location until a new job is secured, which can may not be the best case scenario.  Things to look at.  Will there be employment opportunities for my partner in their field/profession?    If not the move may not work out or may  become increasingly difficult on both a private and employment front.

Other questions to ask yourself

  • Will the work environment be more stressful?  Maybe you’re relocating from a quiet town to a big city, which may involve a faster pace.  Do you really want this and can you handle it?
  • Daily commute – How will it vary from current job?  Will it be public transport or private vehicle.  Is there a significant time difference?
How to Manage Employees from Every Generation

If you’re like many business owners today, your workplace includes three generations of employees: Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y/Millennials.

Baby Boomers are extremely job-focused. They value security and stability, and appreciate clearly stated goals and tasks. They prefer to communicate through in-person meetings and emails.

Gen X (born roughly between 1965 and 1981) values work-life balance and independence. They are adaptable and resourceful. Most have learned to use digital technology and communicate with the latest tech tools.

Gen Y/Millennial (born roughly between 1982 and 2001) they value work-life balance and flexibility even more than Gen X. They also seek freedom and want to be treated as equals from their first day on the job. This generation doesn’t fear authority and seeks challenging and meaningful work. They are definitely the most tech-savvy of the three groups, preferring to communicate quickly via texting and social media.

Strategies

  • Strive to keep older workers engaged. When an older employee leaves the company because he or she no longer feels valued, your business loses valuable institutional knowledge. Make sure your older staffers don’t feel like they’re being pushed aside for younger team members. Make extra efforts to keep them engaged and show that their contributions are valued.
  • Tap into diverse age groups to innovate. Fire up meetings or brainstorming sessions by including employees from all age levels. A diverse group means more viewpoints and more creativity. Having staff members from different generations gives your business an advantage, so use it!
  • Honour each person’s contribution. Especially in a group setting such as a team project or meeting, make sure that you show how much you appreciate what each worker brings to the team. Encourage workers to share their knowledge, whether it’s an entry-level Millennial showing a Boomer manager how to use social media or a Boomer employee explaining the history of a long-term client to a Gen X salesperson.
  • Emphasise commonality. It’s easy for employees to become adversarial when they focus on their differences. Continually remind your team of its common goals—winning new business, growing sales or whatever your company is working to achieve. Pulling together will help overcome generational differences and build tighter bonds.

5 Interview Tips and Techniques

Interview Tips # 1 Research the organization

Everyone gets nervous at interview time.   It’s a big occasion and you should be nervous. However, if you start with some thorough research, you start to build a case in your own mind of why you should be sitting in that interview room or in front of a panel. Having some confidence is a solid first step to overcoming nerves.

Interview Tips # 2 Research the role

One thing that constantly surprises me is that few people really have a thorough understanding of the role that they are applying for.  The person writing the advert is often not the person that you’ll be reporting to. Things always sound different on paper compared to what you will actually be doing in the role.

Interview Tips # 3 Research yourself

Employers want you to be self aware. Have a long hard look at what you have achieved, the way you have achieved that result and the skills you developed or demonstrated along the way. This type of reflection helps you understand your strengths. It gives you confidence and helps you overcome nerves.

Interview Tips # 4 Interviewer Insight

No two interview processes are the same. Depending on the organization and the role, you could be interviewed by a recruitment consultant, the HR department, the line manager or all three individually, or any combination. Each will have a different agenda for the interview. This is important to remember as your approach with each should be slightly different.

Interview Tips # 5 Build rapport

Be friendly. People really like that! One of the best ways to relax is to assume the interviewer is on your side. Good interviewers are not interested in tripping you up. In fact, most of them are on your side, or are at the very least they will be approaching the interview in a professional manner. It may even help to you to relax if you think of the interviewer as someone who wants you to do your best.
